Windows and Doors Essex

The first-ever double-glazed window was invented in America, and dates back to 1930, by Mr C.D. Haven.  Double glazing didn’t become popular in the UK until the 1970s.  Now it is more unusual to see a home without it!  And this why.

Energy efficiency is on every homeowner’s mind at present.  What with offers such as the Green Homes Grant Scheme and then energy companies competing on price, reducing the carbon footprint and saving on household bills has never been easier.

The UK is trying to achieve carbon reduction targets, and with this in mind, we should stop relying so much on gas and other fuels to heat our homes. There are ways we can make this happen. By upgrading your home and installing double or trip glazing, your home will become instantly warmer. So, how does double glazing work?

Double glazing is much more efficient than a single pane and works in three ways:

  • It keeps the heat in
  • Stops draughts coming in from the window and frame
  • Insulates in the same way as cavity wall insulation

How does the extra pane of glass work?

Double glazing has two panes that fit close together. There is one pane on the inside and another on the outside. Then there is the air gap, also known as a tight air pocket. There is a science behind double glazing!

When we look at how heat energy is transferred between a hot and cold space, it is known as convection. Consider how woollen clothing works!  It traps heat next to your skin. Double glazing is no different.  With convection, you need a reliable conductor. When the air becomes trapped between the glass, it is unable to circulate, therefore, reducing the rate in which heat is lost from inside your home.

The majority of double glazing is made from uPVC or aluminium frames.

Both materials are known for their durability and efficiency.

How does double glazing reduce noise?

We have already discussed the benefits of double glazing is an excellent source of insulation.  The extra pane of glass will also reduce the amount of noise coming into your home.  Ideal if you live in a built-up area, or next to a busy road.  Sound is produced through vibrations, travelling from the source to our ears.  By adding an extra pane of glass, that sound wave becomes less audible.

Reducing your energy bills and increase security

We have already mentioned that the extra pane of glass keeps your home warmer, therefore reducing your energy bills on a monthly or yearly basis. Another added benefit is the level of security you will be bringing to your home. An extra pane of glass will make it far more difficult to smash and will put intruders off. You can be safe in the knowledge that when you are asleep at night, or perhaps you go off on your holidays, your home will be far more secure. This reason alone will instantly add value to your property should you choose to sell in the future.

In conclusion, by installing double glazing, you will be benefitting all round:

  • You will lower your current energy bills
  • Helping the environment and lowering the carbon footprint
  • Reducing draughts and cold spots
  • Less noise pollution
