So what is the importance of natural lighting

For centuries, natural lighting has been enriching homes and workplaces. This practice is referred to as daylighting. It is thought that Romans were the first people to use glass windows.  They were designed to allow natural light into buildings, also protecting them from harsh elements.

Over the years, natural lighting has become less important in households.  This is due to electrical lighting becoming more efficient and effective.

With that said, we are becoming more aware of the positive impact that natural lighting has on our physical and mental wellbeing.  You will find that many properties have roof lights installed to allow in as much natural light as possible.

In this article, we are going to explain how natural lighting in your home or workplace can be beneficial for your health, and of course, how much it can save on your energy bills.

Natural lighting can boost human performance

A study some years ago showed that students who had the most daylight in their classrooms scored much higher in tests than those who relied on artificial lighting.

The same applies to employees working with natural lighting. They had far more energy than those with artificially lit rooms.

This research dating back to 1999, shows that natural lighting can increase human performance.

Natural lighting can improve your mood

There is a known condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).  Most people who say they suffer from this are mainly affected in the winter months.  One of the main symptoms is depression.

The most common symptoms are a drop in mood, overeating, sleeping more than usual and low energy levels.

The main reason winter is the worst season for SAD sufferers is the lack of natural lighting and shorter days.  Dull days will see a drop in serotonin levels and will affect your mood.

Natural lighting will boost your Vitamin D level

Natural sunlight is the best source of Vitamin D.  More commonly known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’, it is essential for maintaining healthy bones and teeth, supporting your immune system, regulating insulin and general health of your heart.

Natural lighting improves your sleep pattern

Sunlight is known to impact how well you sleep at night.  You should try and enjoy at least 30 minutes of direct sunlight as early in the morning as possible.

Sunlight in the morning is said to have an impact on your sleep due to ‘circadian rhythms’ which is a humans 24-hour biological cycle.  By making the most of those early rays, you are more likely to fall asleep quicker in the evening.

Natural lighting can have a positive effect on your vision

Most of us have hectic lifestyles at work and at home.  We spend so much time on computers and phones, and we are usually surrounded by fluorescent lighting, even when we take a trip to the supermarket.  A result of this can be regular headaches and eye strain, sometimes becoming more serious later on in life.  By using natural lighting more often, these problems can be prevented.
