● Frequently asked

Bi-Fold Doors — questions answered

How much do bi-fold doors cost?

+

Costs vary with size, material and configuration. A 3-panel aluminium bi-fold typically starts around £4,500 supplied and fitted; a 4-panel around £5,800; and a large 6-panel set up around £8,500. uPVC bi-folds are around 30% cheaper but available in fewer colours. Every quote we provide is itemised and includes survey, fitting, certification and disposal of your old doors.

How long does it take to fit bi-fold doors?

+

Most domestic bi-fold installs take 1 to 2 days on site. The longer wait is manufacturing — typically 4 to 6 weeks from your survey to delivery. We'll book the fit date with you in advance and almost always make existing structural openings work without major builder involvement.

Do bi-fold doors need planning permission in Essex?

+

In most cases, no. Replacing existing doors with bi-folds counts as permitted development, and FENSA-registered installers (we are) self-certify the work to building control. Planning permission only typically comes into play if you're widening the opening as part of an extension, or if the property is listed or in a conservation area. We'll flag it during the survey if it applies.

Are aluminium or uPVC bi-fold doors better?

+

Aluminium for 90% of homes. The slimmer sightlines mean more glass and a more contemporary look, the structural strength allows larger panels, and the powder-coated finish lasts decades without fading. uPVC bi-folds are the better budget option and still perform well thermally — they just look chunkier and come in fewer colours.

How energy efficient are bi-fold doors?

+

Modern aluminium bi-folds achieve whole-door U-values from 1.3 W/m²K — comparable to a high-quality A-rated window. We use thermally-broken frames, 28mm argon-filled double glazing with low-e coatings as standard, and triple glazing on request. The result: no cold draughts, minimal heat loss, and condensation reduced to almost nothing.

Can bi-fold doors replace existing French or patio doors?

+

Almost always yes. Most existing French and patio door openings are wide enough to take a 3 or 4-panel bi-fold, and we can usually fit without changing the structural opening. If you want a wider set, we work with trusted local builders who can extend the opening and add the steel beam if needed.
