● Frequently asked

French Doors — questions answered

How much do French doors cost?

+

A standard 1.5m uPVC French door set installed in Essex typically costs from £1,800. Composite French doors start around £2,400, and aluminium from £3,200. Adding sidelights, decorative glass or non-standard colours increases the price. Every quote is itemised so you can see exactly what you're paying for — including survey, fitting, FENSA certification and removal of your old doors.

What's the difference between French doors and patio doors?

+

French doors are hinged and swing open (in or out). Patio doors slide horizontally on a track. French doors give you the full opening width as fresh air and look more traditional; sliding patio doors save space because nothing swings into the room or garden. For openings under 2 metres, French doors usually look better; over 2 metres, patio or bi-fold doors come into their own.

Are French doors secure?

+

Yes — modern French doors are very secure. Ours come with 6 or 8-point hookbolt locking, anti-snap and anti-bump euro cylinders, and reinforced internal beading so the glass cannot be removed from outside. PAS 24-certified and Secured by Design options are available if your home insurance requires them.

Do French doors open inwards or outwards?

+

Both options are available. Outward-opening is more common in the UK because it saves internal floor space and works better in smaller rooms. Inward-opening is occasionally preferred when there's a patio or step that would block an outward swing. We'll advise during the survey.

Can French doors be installed in an existing patio door opening?

+

In most cases yes — and it's a popular upgrade for older sliding patio doors that have lost their thermal performance. The existing structural opening is usually fine; we adjust the frame to suit and finish the reveals to match. Where the opening is significantly wider than a standard French door, we'll add fixed sidelights to fill the space.

How energy efficient are French doors?

+

All our French doors are double-glazed as standard with low-emissivity coatings and argon gas-filled cavities, delivering whole-door U-values from 1.2 W/m²K. Triple glazing is available on request. Combined with multi-chambered frames and high-quality gaskets, they cut heat loss and eliminate the draughts that often come with older timber French doors.
